Outdoor Mushroom Cultivation in Manitoba: A Fungi-Themed Residency

Join Tom Nagy of River City Mushrooms for an entire weekend of hands-on, interactive programs that will explore seasonal and perennial gardening with fungi. Come on out and learn how you can successfully cultivate a variety of delicious, gourmet and medicinal mushrooms outdoors in Manitoba.

Topics will include an introduction to fungal anatomy, life cycles and ecological ecological functions, species highlights, materials and methods, producing and working with mushroom spawn, stacking functions, crop integration and more.

Four key techniques and cultivation methods will be highlighted and described in detail, and participants will leave each program with either mushroom spawn or an assembled project that they can then continue to grow at home. Join small scale mushroom cultivation expert Tom Nagy of River City Mushrooms as he introduces you to using mycelium in the form of grain and sawdust spawn to produce your own homegrown gourmet and medicinal mushrooms. During this program, you will be introduced to how you can select and properly use mushroom spawn to successfully grow a wide variety of different mushroom species and strains using readily available natural materials. Learn how to easily and creatively incorporate mushrooms into vegetable gardens, perennial beds, naturalized outdoor areas and more, enriching your soil and increasing biodiversity while also harvesting bountiful crops of mushrooms throughout the growing season. Gardening with Mushrooms

Growing your own gourmet edible mushrooms is a lot easier than you think. Come and learn the basics of what you need to know to produce bountiful crops of mushrooms alongside your favourite vegetable crops this coming growing season. Many different mushroom varieties will be discussed, as well as several growing techniques that are best suited for each variety.

This program is free to the public, but registration is required. If you can’t make it out in person, you can register to listen in over Zoom.

Introduction to Mushroom Cultivation

Join small scale mushroom cultivation expert Tom Nagy of River City Mushrooms as he introduces you to the world of homegrown gourmet and medicinal mushrooms using pre-inoculated mushroom grow blocks. During this program, you will acquire a basic understanding of what mushrooms and fungi are, what species and varieties can be easily grown both indoors and outdoors as well as how to best care for them to ensure consistent and bountiful crops of beautiful mushrooms. Mushroom grow blocks are an accessible, hassle-free way for beginners to experience mushroom cultivation without having to invest in equipment or learn advanced techniques.
